Speeding Up NZ Internet

I posted the NZ Homepage Hall of Shame as a wake up call to the poor performance of 75 top New Zealand websites. The post has caused a few ripples in the NZ internet scene (Stuff blog, ComputerWorld) and I have been contacted by a number of companies who have some improvements to their performance

The problem:

New Zealand webpages are fat and bloated, we have an average size of 304K. That’s far too big when most of the population are still on modems. Our pages are big not just because of excessive use of banners, imagery and javascript, but also ignorance of using modern techniques to more efficiently deliver the content.

So I put out the challenge to all New Zealand Web Developers - Speed up your webpages !

We can speed up New Zealand’s Internet together!

In the coming weeks, I will be posting more information on how to improve your webpage performance and I’ll providing more analysis of the state of NZ websites.
